Virtual Sewing Classes

I am thrilled to say that my very 1st 

Online Sewing Class 

is under my belt!

Thanks to Lynee Urban of Story to Media and her sister!

I call them The Sister Team!   

Although we had some challenges and a few bloopers (some of them just may surface on social media later), we learned a lot while working through them and I'm very happy with the results! Of course we will take what we've learned - as well as all feedback to improve future classes!

We are having SEW much fun! 

Lynee worked diligently to create my logo for the classes, she established a website, does countless hours of  filming and editing, creates intro and outro videos, responds to technical questions - mine and the students! And that's just some of the work she does!

Her sister, Marcey flies in to work with her on the filming and editing!
These two ladies are truly a powerful team!
My sewing space has become a filming studio!  

And I love it!

This is the finished garment for Course #1

It's a fit and flare ponte knit dress, which could also be shortened to a top or tunic.

Sewing with knits was just one of the techniques that I taught in this class!

And now we have begun filming Course #2! 

The 2nd course is a woven top that features bust darts, set-in sleeves and a cute keyhole opening in the back!

 I offer several tips and tricks as I'm working through each segment.

And I add at least one bonus video during each course.

My classes are for all levels of experience!  Course # 2 began on November 5, 2018.

Summer UFO

Summer UFO

I found this year-old self-drafted UFO in my sewing room as I was moving to the larger space (I think I can call it a studio now). 😊 Because it was from a year ago, I needed to alter the side seams - then I only needed to attach the sleeves and finish the hems. It was a quick project and I was able to wear it the next day!

The fabric is a semi-sheer polyester with a bit of spandex in it. I don't remember where I purchased it, but it may have been part of my Hancock's Fabric stash (who has since gone out of business).

This top is perfect for these last days of summer!

The hems (neckline, bottom and sleeves) were finished with a narrow hem. I really wanted to finish the neckline with fold-over elastic, but out of all the colors I have, I don't have white or this tealish color! Sigh!

Moving on...

To make the narrow hem: 

I serged the edges first with a 4 thread set up.

Then I folded the edge along the serged stitches and ironed the seam - the serged edge rolls over beautifully and eliminates measuring. We all love that, don't we? 😊  By the way, I love using my clapper to hold those folds in place.

I then folded the edge once again - and of course pressed again - and used my clapper.

The last step was to top stitch. You want to top stitch from the "top" of the garment (right side). I can do so by feeling for the edge to start, then using the guides on my face plate to keep it straight as I sew.

If you need to, you can mark your stitch line - just make sure your marking tool of choice is removable, I like Flexion pens,but recently tried and like this pen by Maderia, which I purchased here:

And Tada! I was done with my UFO!  Who doesn't like quick, easy projects! ❤

Scrappy Tops

Hi all,

Welcome to my Blog, SEW CARRIE SEW and my 1st Blog Post!

I have recently discovered a new use for my scraps!  My Scrappy Top!  I love color and just could not bear to have the printed piece just sitting on my shelf.  It is actually left over from and over-sized failed top.  I was about 70 pounds heavier when I made the over sized top, but after seeing pics of myself in it - I knew it was the absolute wrong style for me then and now. LOL!

I"m pretty sure we've all been there - saw a pic of something we purchased or made and thought - "What was I thinking?" I know it's happened to me more than a few times.  Looks good in the mirror, but the pics tell a different story!

Well now, even if you can't save the garment, you can save the fabric!

I used one of my self-drafted tops and slashed the front starting at 10 inches from the underarm to the hemline. I then added seam allowances to each of the slashes.  I spent some time deciding where the print would land on the pieces, making sure to match my notches (including the sleeves). Once the layout was completed and cut out, I sewed the 2 front pieces together to recreate a full front piece. From there I constructed the top as normal. I added binding to the neck edge and sleeves and a narrow hem on the bottom.
