Chiffon Duster

I love sewing for my adult Daughter!

Usually, I make garments from pictures that she sends me.

But this time I decided to surprise her with a beautiful, self-drafted flowy duster for her Birthday!

She loves it!

I love how she styled it - nice casual look with this yummy chiffon!

This print was very unique!
This is the back view.
It is a repeating border print - stripes on the top and flowers on the bottom.  I turned the fabric so that the flowers ended up on one side and the stripes on the other side. If you look closely, you can see that the flowers are also intersecting with stripes.

This is the front view.
The unique print actually made it fun to work with!
I have more of this fabric and plan to make myself a duster - which will look different from this one. 😀

I used French seams on the side, shoulder and sleeve seams.
It created a very nice, clean finish on this sheer fabric.

Look at that smile! 😃

I'm happy that she's happy!

Floral Cardigan

This Madison Cardigan pattern by @stylesewme has been on my to do list for much too long!

I purchased the pattern when it was 1st published, but just could not find the perfect fabric. Then...Minerva sent me this glorious Ponte Roma knit with this beautiful print and I knew it was going to be this pattern!

I found the fabric and pattern easy to work with. I cut a size XL and did not need to make any atlerations!

The instructions stressed stay-stitching the back neckline, but I used the technique that I use on most knits. I applied fusible knit tape on the back neckline as well as the shoulders. I then sergeged the neckline.

A narrow hem was also used in the instructions, but because the wrong side of the fabric is black, I decided that I didn't want to see the print on the wrong side. So I opted for purchased bias binding. And I'm very happy with the outcome!

I tried it on twice...before and after I added the binding. I have to tell you that I was in love with the fit, but even more so with the drape of this garment!
I loved it so much that I did not want to take it off after either try on! It is even more lovely that I thought it would be...both the fabric and the pattern design!

It was quite a windy day when I took the photos, but I think they work!

Would I make it again? Definitely!

Last 2019 Post - Oh the Red Dress!

This is my last post of the year!
Red is a great color to end the year on, right!!!

Who remembers my red floral print duster?
Yes!
The one I refashioned by adding the red linen blend bands?
Yep, that one!

Well, it just so happens that I had just enough of the band fabric left over to make a red dress! I love red dresses! Ok, Ok...I love red! 😍

I used view B of McCall's 7189 - which has now become one of my TNTs.  I really love wearing princess seam cuts, but this one has a slight curved hem. And it looks wonderful with the duster and on it's on! I'm in love!

My alterations were my usual...I enlarged the waist by about 1 inch and made the sleeves my favorite elbow length!

I love the fit and "slightly" flare silhouette of this pattern as well as the slightly curved hem.  Because of the curve, I did a narrow top-stitched hem.
My oldest daughter took the photos and thought my red shoes would look better, but I didn't agree and wore black pumps.  Not sure I will wear red shoes with it...don't want too much red all at once!

I also love the fit and "kinda" flare silhouette of this pattern.

I'm glad I had enough of the linen blend that I purchased from Vogue Fabrics left...less wrinkles, right?
😏
I will definitely make it again...maybe in a ponte or a wool blend!

I'm looking forward to wearing it this spring. It's going to look and feel great with the duster.

Or maybe with my black and white jacket - click here to see that blog post!

Red is a neutral, right? 😍

I sincerely thank each of you for all of your support this year!

I'm looking forward to continuing to connect with you in 2020!

Chiffon Duster Re-Fashion

Chiffon Duster Re-Fashion

I purchased this chiffon print to make a duster.

Keep reading to see how and why I re-fashioned it!

Then I read about the @Sewcialists Mini Challenge.
Yes! I still love sewing challenges! 😍
We had 4 days to complete the challenge.  The only requirement was that it contained one of the colors of their logo.

We went to their blog to spin the "color wheel".  The color you landed on was to be present in whatever you made. I happened to land on coral, but it happened to be the only exception.
We could use RED instead!
With that spin, I was all in!

So I pulled out my fabric (which happened to have all of the allowed colors) and made this self-drafted duster! I posted it on Instagram with the hashtag #sewcialists just in the nick of time!
I love the shirt-tail hemline.
But...after it hung around a few days, I realized it needed more structure and that I probably wouldn't wear it as it was.  I was not 100% happy with it.

I really couldn't decide how I'd "fix" it...until this new #alteritaugust challenge hosted by @sewnorth surfaced!
And...the "fix" also fits the Sew Much Talent Facebook group August Re-fashion and Alteration Challenge!
I love it when I can sew one garment that works for more than one challenge! 😉

I looked through my stash for this RED linen blend that I've had for much too long.

It was as perfect a match as I thought it would be! It was also the perfect weight for my re-fashion plan.

Ummm...I forgot to finish the edges before I washed it! But all was well!

I had to put some thought into how I wanted to add the RED front and sleeve bands to my duster.  Did I want to unpick the narrow hems (Which would take forever) or did I want to cut the hem off?
My rotary cutter and I decided to cut it off very carefully.

I chose not to interface the bands, because I was already happy with the weight of the fabric.
I sewed the new front and sleeve bands on, then serged the seam allowance.

 Tada!
I now have a new and improved duster that I am 1000% happy with and love to wear!
It is no longer flimsy and inexpensive looking!

The center back originally had gathers at the neckline.  When I refashioned it, I decided that those gathers should be changed to an inverted pleat.
Sew Much Better!

I'm thinking my favorite black dress would look great with it!
But my leggings and skinny jeans look great, too!

I love what the weight of the linen did to this duster.
It gave it structure - which allows it to hang well when I'm moving!

I love the air and flow this gets!

I believe I can fly!

😎
